Funny happy birthday images

Six funny birthday images: a cat beside a cake with one paw-shaped dent in it, a dachshund enduring a party hat, a sloth who has no plans, a hedgehog startled by a lit candle, a frog attached to a balloon slightly larger than the frog, and a goose arriving through confetti at speed. Each downloads free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

The joke is never written on the picture. That is a rule with a reason behind it rather than a preference: an image generator asked to draw a punchline draws it in its own invented handwriting, gets a letter wrong about as often as not, and produces a card that is funny for the wrong reason. So the drawing carries the situation and the line underneath carries the joke, set as real type. The reader puts the two together in about half a second, which is also how a card works when it is folded.

Nothing here is unkind. A birthday joke that lands on the recipient’s age, weight or face is not a joke you can send to somebody you like, and it is not what this section is for. Every one of the six puts the animal in the wrong, or in a predicament, and leaves the person receiving it entirely out of it. The cat denies everything. The goose has committed. Nobody is being told they are getting old.

The drawings are cartoons and they are ours. That is a different look from the rest of the site on purpose — the general and addressed sections are painted scenes, and these are drawn with rounded shapes and bold color, because a soft watercolor sloth is not a funny sloth. Both looks come from the same place and neither came from a stock library.

These are square files like the others, which means a chat app will not crop the animal out of the frame or the line off the bottom. Send them as a picture rather than as a link if you can: the small details some of these jokes rest on — the dent in the frosting, the tilt of the hat — are the first things a preview thumbnail throws away.

The lettering on all six is the same two lines in the same face as the rest of the site, set from a text file after the drawing arrives. On a joke card the second line is doing the work, so it is worth saying plainly that nothing about it was generated: somebody wrote it, somebody read it, and what reaches the picture is what is in that file, character for character.

Animals do the work in all six, and that is a choice rather than a shortage of ideas. A joke card with a person in it is a joke about that person, and the recipient has to decide whether it is meant to be them. A cat that has plainly been in the frosting belongs to nobody, so there is nothing to take the wrong way, and the card can be sent to somebody you have not seen in a year.

A funny card is not always the right card, and this section is the smallest of the three for that reason. If the birthday calls for something warmer, the general section has eight, and the addressed section has seven that name who they are for.
