Funny happy birthday image with a sloth

A sloth lies smiling in a striped hammock between two palms, both legs dangling over the sand.

The card says

Happy Birthday

Take the whole day off

The picture is a beach scene built around a hammock. Two palm trees lean toward each other from either side of the square, their trunks curving in matching arcs, and a striped hammock in coral and cream hangs between them. Lying in it is a sloth, drawn in soft brown and cream fur, eyes closed and its mouth curved into a small, contented smile. One arm rests along the edge of the hammock, and both legs hang loosely off the front of it, feet dangling well below the fabric.

Below the hammock, the sand carries a scattering of small objects — a pink shell, a smaller pale one, a round crab off to one side, and a starfish further along. None of them are doing anything; they are simply set down on the sand the way things are on a beach nobody has tidied. Past the sand, a pale turquoise line of water runs along the edge of the frame in a soft wave shape, and above all of it the sky is a plain warm cream with the two palm crowns spreading into it.

There is no cake here, no candles, no hat — nothing that marks the scene as a birthday at all beyond the fact that this is a birthday card. The joke is quieter than the others in this set: it is simply a flat refusal to do anything on the actual day, staged as completely as a hammock and two palm trees can stage it. The line underneath is what turns that picture into a birthday message instead of just a nice beach drawing.

The lower stretch of the square, below the sand and the shoreline, is left as plain, pale color with nothing drawn into it — no more shells, no footprints, nothing that pulls the eye down there. That is the zone built for the type. Because the sloth and the hammock sit high in the frame, the type has a wide, calm strip to sit on without crossing a single object in the picture.

The words on the card are “Happy Birthday” and, smaller underneath, “Take the whole day off.” Both lines are set as real type after the artwork was finished, from a short line written and checked on its own, not produced by whatever generated the palm trees and the sloth. A card about doing nothing is a bad place for a typo — the whole point is that the line is short and exact.

It suits someone who has already made it clear they are not doing much for their birthday, or who would rather be told to relax than be invited to a party. It is not a card that assumes a celebration is happening; it assumes the opposite, and says that is a fine way to spend the day too.

This is the only one of the six funny cards on this site set at a beach rather than indoors or beside a pond — useful if the birthday actually falls in the middle of someone’s vacation, since the picture already matches the excuse.

To send it

  • A relaxed pick for the birthday that falls on a weekend, or for someone who has already told you their only plan is to do nothing.
  • Pairs well with a short note about taking the actual day off.
  • The beach setting has no landmark in it, so it works for a birthday anywhere, not just near water.
