On this card, a generous armful of garden roses fills a cream ceramic pitcher, the blooms running from a soft blush pink at their centers to a pale, almost ivory cream toward the outer petals. There are two dozen or so open flowers packed close together, with a few tight buds and green leaves worked in among them, and not one of the blooms faces exactly the same way as its neighbors — the arrangement reads as gathered rather than staged for a photograph.

The pitcher itself is plain and rounded, cream-colored with a simple curved handle, the kind of jug that might just as easily hold water on a kitchen table as flowers. It’s set slightly off-center on the table beneath it, which keeps the picture from feeling too symmetrical — the roses lean a little to one side, the way a full bunch does once it’s actually been set down rather than arranged for a camera.

What you’d read on the finished card — two lines, set afterward as ordinary type — comes from a separate step entirely; nothing here was drawn to look like writing, and nothing had to be smoothed over to make either line legible.

The larger line reads “Happy Birthday,” and underneath it, smaller, “With love, on your day.” It’s the most tender wording in this set of eight, better suited to a rose arrangement than it would be to balloons or bunting — a card meant to say something warm rather than to announce a party.

Where the meadow card elsewhere in this set is loose and wild, all butterflies and open field, this one is a gathered, deliberate bunch in a container — closer to what actually arrives at a door than to what grows in a field.
